Angel Island.....finally...
March 27th, on Saturday, really my final day in California, I was going to get up, drive to Tiberon, the north side of the bay, catch the ferry and go over to Angel Island, finish that up in a couple hours, then head over to the Golden Gate bridge on the way back and then hit the Marin Headlands right there by the bridge. Hmmm...didn't quite work out that way.
Now there are only so many ferrys going over to Angel Island and there are only so many coming back. So I wanted to make sure I get on the 10am ferry...then get the 2:30 heading back. Plenty of time.....NOT.I got to the area and had 10 minutes to find a parking spot and get my ferry ticket...so I was in a rush. BIG MISTAKE. I finally found a parking spot....10 bucks for the day...not so bad. I grabbed my stuff and ran the block and half down the alley to get to the ticket booth. Whew! I was in line. Only problem...I left my beverages back at the car. Geesh!
Too late...I'm not going to be over there too long...I'll get back and they will be waiting for me.
There was a group of older folks taking a guided tour that was on my boat. This is looking over at Angel Island.
Did I mention that every time I am down there, it is very windy and usually kinda a cool. So I have on my pants that can turn into shorts, my sweatshirt, and a long sleeved shirt on underneath. I'm prepared. HA...Today...it has to be 80 degrees with no wind....WOW...was I hot....This is looking back at the dock...
Now I mentioned there was a tour group on this boat. This guy in the hat is the hero of all of these ladies. He's actually a pretty entertaining guy. He brought bread for all of his folks to feed the seagulls off the back of the boat. The ladies loved this!
Here he is in action:
Thats him on the left in the cool hat.
So my thought was, when we approached the island, it felt like I was going to Jurassic park. Very quiet. There was nobody there. Our boat maybe had 40 people on it. Here we are arriving:
So I hit the ground running. What I didn't realize was the island to take the path around is 5 miles. Thats not counting any excursions off the trail which I like to take, or a trip to the top, which is around 1000 feet. So making the 2:30 ferry might be tough.
Once I headed up these stairs I was on the path and just like that, it was quiet, and no one existed. It was like everyone on earth had disappeared.
It was like Fantasy Island...I went through the portal.
I headed down the path around the west side first so I could see the GG Bridge and work my way around to Alcatraz and then back up the east side.
I quickly found myself venturing off the path in to the brush, out of the brush, through the trees, thinking any minute i'm going to see a dinosaur.
The island is rich with history that seems to have been just left.
This area with these abandoned houses used to be an Army post during the civil war.
There is also an abandoned Nike Missile site. On the north side there is a beach you can get down to, but I didn't go. I did see a couple people down there.
Just after this area, I headed up the hill to try to get to the top. So far, my people count is 2 at this point....and dinosaurs = 0.
This was the path I took to start to the top....I guess its not really a path, but it was my path. I had to stop a few times....cause it was kind of steep. This is the point where I started removing clothes. I was hot.
There were all kinds of areas to explore and no one there. The kids would have really liked this place. So after quite awhile of hiking, I make it to the top. As you can see in the pictures on my website, I slowly get to the top and you can tell because of the view of the pictures. Some very nice views and again, always very quiet....until you get to the top....
I was there maybe 5 minutes. Now the trail going up is narrow and the old timer group with the guy in the cool hat was headed down, so I had to step into the weeds for a little bit and let all these people pass.
When I finally got to the top, I was disappointed because there were probably 50 people up there. There wasn't alot of room and everyone had all the tables for lunch. Oh, I forgot to mention the 5 obnoxious college guys who were talking and being quite loud. Really ruined it for me....So I was off and back down I went.
I'm still thinking I'm going to get to the ferry on time.
i read the sign....I have about an hour to get there. The sign says 2.2 miles...I'm like OMG....I'm never going to make it. As I come around the east side, this is where WW2 had a immigrant processing area and this is where all the big shot army people lived...you could tell the houses, although abandoned, looked bigger and nicer. They had a baseball field, although it was pretty small.
It was a long 2.2 miles....up hills and down hills....geesh. I got back to the dock at 2:25, only to find out there is no 2:30 ferry today. 3:30 is the next ferry. So I get to sit and rest for an hour.
I was sooooo thirsty. I hogged the water faucet. This was the last ferry of the day. There had to be close to 200 people on the ferry. I was beat! I got back to the car and drank 5 bottles of gatorade and ate my bag of beef jerky I forgot to take with me.
I didn't even stop for the bridge or the Marin Headlands. I went straight back to the hotel. It was an hour drive back. I got me some dinner and started packing for the trip back home.
Pretty interesting place. Alot of history that is still there, seems untouched. Kind of spooky looking to see it all still there, like the people just disappeared. Very strange!

GOOD PEOPLE...
There are good people out there...
Through all the drama on Saturday, somehow, I lost my Ipod Touch. Now for my travels, and simple everyday tasks such as flying the sweeper, or mowing the grass, I use that thing. On a plane, I watch movies on it. All quality songs on there. Well something happened on Saturday and I lost it.
I felt violated. It was gone and I didn't know where. Mowing just wasn't the same.
GOOD NEWS!
This afternoon I got an email from Apple stating that Ryan had found my Ipod and they provided me his phone number. Naturally, an honest man deserves an honest reward. He didn't have to try to turn it in, but I'm thankful that he did.
The ipod in its protective case works flawlessly. The case on the otherhand didn't fare so well, but I guess that is what cases are supposed to do. The earbuds didn't live to tell the story.
I'm pretty excited! I went and picked it up and all is well again in the world....for now.
Still working on Angel Island pictures...
THANKS RYAN!

There she is...Yosemite...
If you've never been, you should add it to your "bucket list" of things to do or places to visit...at least once. You don't have to go and do elaborate hikes to see the sites. A walk around the valley floor will take you to the bottom of all the places you see in pictures.
I have been fortunate enough to have visited on several occasions. I prefer to go on a week day so I don't have to deal with all of the foreign tourists who have no respect for what they are seeing. Really gripes me. My good friend Matt joined me for this years trip. Now Matt is a professional hiker and has done all of the trails at Yosemite probably twice if not more. So a 10 mile hike up the mountain is like a walk in the park for this guy.
Todays mission, Nevada Falls.
The day started at 4:30am for me which really isn't all that bad because really its 6:30am at home. So I had an hour drive north to pick up Matt from his house. Then it would be a 3 hour drive directly east to the park. Earlier in my blog you could see we stopped for breakfast. :-)
We arrived at the park only to see that there had been a snowstorm blow through the night before. All of the pine trees were covered with fresh snow. The sun was out, and the sign by the ranger station said CHAINS REQUIRED! We didn't have chains and luckily I smiled at the Honey in the ranger booth and she allowed us to go right on in to the park without chains. Ok, maybe it wasn't because I smiled at her. At least we looked like we knew what we were doing. We found our parking spot and geared up all of our stuff. We carried quite a bit of stuff. GPS's, camera gear, food, phones, you name it.
We headed down the Mist trail to the Vernal Falls Bridge and then we were switching over to the John Muir Trail and taking that to Clark Point. From there spectacular views of Nevada falls and the back side of Half Dome.
We ate our lunch here. Peanut butter on bagels, all the beef jerky you could eat, nuts and gatoraid....yummy.
AHHHH to be on top....
The trail to this point had some pretty hairy areas to cross. I can see why they close some of the trails. There were a couple of places where the trail was in the snow and only as wide as your shoes were sitting side by side and it was basically a ledge. You fall to the right, you fall in snow. You fall to the left....you're going to be falling for a while.....pretty risky.
Some of the areas we had to climb up the snow bank to reach the trail. It was difficult enough to go up, I was thinking more about the trip back down.
Here is part of the trail I was talking about:
The hike to Clark Point I think was only a 3 mile hike up. 1800 feet in elevation I think. We came back down to the Vernal Falls Bridge.
From here the trail can split and you can go to the Vernal Falls. Only thing, the trail is closed because the spray from the falls makes the steps shear ice. Well, we climbed over the fence and went to take a look anyways.
Now a few years ago, Dawn was with me and I dragged her up to the top of the Vernal Falls. To get there you have to climb over 600 stairs. Near the top, there is a small railing and you have about 18 inches to get by. So if people are coming down, it can get hairy because at this point its STRAIGHT down.
We ended up going up probably halfway.
As you can see, we were not the only ones there.
After getting sprayed a little we headed back to the car. Went looking for the Chapel and found it after walking through the jungle with our GPS devices. Only small problem was we needed to cross the river so we had to find a bridge.
This I think is probably one of the more interesting shots I got on the trip.
I made a couple variations of it and included them on my website. Another shot of the Chapel I liked was this one:
After a quick walk over to the Lower Yosemite falls, which look quite little in the pictures, but keep in mind, that lower section is 400ft, longer than a football field. Combined, the Upper and Lower falls drop 2425ft, the 6th highest waterfall in the world. I did that hike last year and nearly died!
After that, we headed back to the car and headed home after a quick stop for Pizza! Matt knows all the places to stop!
For this trip, I was really trying to shoot for HDR photos. So every picture I took, I took three pictures with different exposures. So I ended up with 109 finished photos, I took well over 900 pictures and filled two 16 gig CF cards. The 7d camera, being an 18mp camera eats up card space rather quickly!
Fun trip...if you haven't been...add it to your list. Wonderful, quiet, peaceful, refreshing place to visit. Nothing like it...

YOSEMITE
I'm alomst done with the Yosemite Pictures. I really shot this trip in two ways. One for just regular pictures and two, to make HDR photos of some of the pictures. I processed the HDR photos already and now I'm just about done with the other photos. I think I ended up with 30 or so HDR photos and a little over a hundred regular pictures.
The HDR photos are really 3 photos in one combined and then tonemapped. I did notice that some did not turn out because they didn't allign just right. Probably from me breathing hard and not keeping that camera steady. They say, you should use a tripod for best results. I brought one, just not to yosemite. So just about every photo I took was really taking three pictures. The 7d shoots 8 pictures a second and many times I found myself thinking...was that 3 or 4 or 5 shots....
I had the camera setup so the first push of the button would give me a -2 exposure, the next picture would be right on, and the third picture would give me +2 exposure filling the HDR range. So by holding down the button, several times I got more than I needed. Certianly fills up a 16gig card rather quickly, especially since I shoot JPG+Raw. Raw makes a huge difference.
Pictures coming soon...then its on to Angel Island Pictures and Pictures from Kaylah's Track meet...

ODD PICTURE...
Here is kind of an odd picture. A picture of my GPS. Obviously I'm not in a car while this picture was taken. You guessed it, 492mph, I was somewhere over South Dakota on my way to California.
Some airlines allow you to run your GPS in flight while others do not. American does not. It was a quick picture and it didn't hurt anything. :-)
I like to know where I am on long flights. Its easy to turn on and see and then turn it off again. On flights that allow it, I leave it on. All in good fun!

Mission Peak Details...
March 24th, I got off the plane, a 5 hour flight from Chicago to San Jose, and headed over to our Training Center to meet up with our local guy, Matt. I did go to California for a pretty important meeting with Microsoft but I was able to get in 3 pretty decent hikes.
The first one here, wasn't planned. We were looking at going over to Half Moon Bay and try to catch Maverick, the giant wave surfing competition, but the waves were not cooperating.
We had talked about Mission Peak the last time I was here but cloud cover prevented us from trying it.
Here is the trail map....
We came in from the Stanford parking lot. Mission Peak stands 2517ft at the top. This trail takes you 2200 feet in about 3 miles. So all together we are looking at a 6 mile hike. Yeah....after a 5 hour plane ride.
We were just going to go up the trail a little ways....HA
So we left the parking lot gear in hand...just heading up the trail a bit. The sun is setting so I know right off the bat, that any shooting I do could be into the sun which is obviously not ideal. We walked a pretty brisk pace and it was kind of steep. My legs started to burn and I was sweating and starting to breath hard and we weren't even to the first bench.
Now Matt, he's a professional hiker...he's been all over these mountains many times. Cool, calm and collected and he almost ate all of our snacks at the top while I was shooting pictures!
Lesson learned...don't leave the snack bag with Matt.
We made it to the first bench...and decided to go on to the next bench. We made it there, looked up and decided to go on to the next bench. After all there were grandma's already up that far!By the third bench, we decided we had just enough sun light left to get to the top.
This is rounding the last bend and heading to the top, the top is to my back. I'm facing north towards Oakland in this picture:
This is looking the other way to the top:
Did I mention there were cows everywhere...grazing. Yep...you go anywhere near them they run. HAHA...Not that I would know. :-)
Once we made it to the top, the cooler air was quite a relief. Matt on the other hand was obviously prepared and busted out his parka and stocking cap. He arrived several minutes ahead of me....I had to take a couple extra breaks in there.
Once at the top, this is the view back down to the parking lot where we started. Its right in the center:
This is looking north to San Fran:
Great views. Really caused some leg burn in a few areas. I wasn't really sure I wanted to go all the way to the top, because I was planning a pretty extensive Yosemite hike, and last years hike to the Upper Falls just about did me in. So I was afraid I was going to be too sore from this hike to do anything extensive in Yosemite.....too late...we're at the top eating our snacks and taking pictures. Suns going down so we head out. It takes us 57 minutes to get back to the car. Now its off for some lunch.....yep...I haven't eaten all day...yet!
Next major post will be the Yosemite trip. This will take me some time to do the pictures. Very cool stuff!
I do have a couple interesting/funny pictures I'm going to add in as well between...
As usual, all of the pictures can be found on my smugmug site....jscranton.smugmug.com
Until next time...
